I am now a published author of a children's book entitled "Meo:The Pharaoh of Cats."

This book is dedicated to our classmate, Jesse Miller.

I think of this book as the Harry Potter of cats. Cats from ancient Egypt arrive in the foothils of Virginia. When a magic wind blows the cats back to Egypt the tale of the time travel begins.

I already have started the sequel where the two cats arrive in France during The French Revolution.

Meo: The Pharaoh of Cats can be found on www.amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.

I hope you will enjoy my first book and spread the news throughout the NNHS class of 1963 wonderful friends. The book can be enjoyed by both children and parents alike. I would say that any child from 7 yrs to 11 and maybe 12 year olds.

The following is a message from Irene Christofi Leopold's daughter.

Hello! I apologize for this generic message, but you are receiving this because you know my parents, Otto & Irene Leopold. They actually just had their 50th wedding anniversary this week! My brothers and I have planned a small celebration (since you know them, you know they flat out refused a big party!) for them on October 1st where we are getting a family photo taken. After, we plan to take them to dinner. I was hoping to “shower them with cards” at that time from all the people they care about (as a SURPRISE!)! I know it would mean the world to them to hear from all their friends and family, which is why I’m writing! Would you be willing to mail a card within the next couple weeks? I would like to "deliver" them all at dinner on 10/1.
No pressure at all, but if you are interested, please send your card in care of me to the address below:

Otto & Irene Leopold
c/o Lauren Osborn
8544 Ashington Way

Williamsburg, VA 23188

No gifts, please. My parents would appreciate a handwritten message more than anything else. Thanks for your consideration! Also, PLEASE feel free to forward this message to other people who may know them and be interested in participating (which is why I kept the message so generic...sorry again!). All the best,
Lauren (Leopold) Osborn

Update on Bonnie Blankenship.  In March Bonnie was diagnosed with matastatic lung cancer to her back.  She had two weeks of radiation and the 4th chemo treatment is scheduled for this Friday.  On Monday of this week, she had a scan to determine if the chemo was working.  Test results came back this morning and here they are in her words:  Lung stable, lesions on disc 2 and 4 in back have decreased in size, no new lesions and no other metastatic sites noted.  She was doing her happy dance.  She is still having chemo treatments so please continue to pray for her.  This was certainly good news.

Terry Smith......They saw the oncologist to get the results from UVA. They determined this is a small cell carcinoma on his back and two small tumors in his lungs. They have said he can do chemo just to try and shrink this tumor on his back for comfort, because it's getting bigger every day. Terry wants to do this. He is supposed to start Tuesday after getting the port placement Monday and will have four days of treatment in a row. They're going back  for a meeting with the PA and to get his meds for the side effects. Thank you each for your prayers.
This information is from Debbie, Terry's wife, from Facebook.
Please keep him and Debbie in your prayers.

I am asking for prayers for Butch Ragland, he has congestive heart failure.

Please keep him in your prayers. He fought for our country and  is a wonderful person.

The following is a message Butch posted on Facebook, and he has asked that I share with his classmates.."This is in response to several private emails concerning my recent health problems. Yes, I am being treated for Congestive Heart Failure and hopefully will see a decrease of the pressure around my heart due to the heavy fluid buildup. Have been in fair shape since my 5 way Heart Bypass Surgery in 2001 but guess my age and loss of left leg have made me more susceptible to my current heart problems. Anyway, I would appreciate your continued prayers over the next few months with confidence our Lord with help me through this period of ill health! Again, thanks to each of your for your prayers and support! And additional thanks to my wife Ethel, daughter Carrie, Son Jonathan, and all my immediate family near by."   Butch's home address is: Henry Ragland, 4741 N. The below obituary was one that Susan's daughters had planned to post in the Daily Press, but opted to reduce .  You can read the Daily Press obit under the memorial section of this website.

Susan Anna Bauz, 68, peacefully passed away on November 2, 2014 in the beauty of rural Connecticut where she had moved only 10 days before to live with her younger daughter and her family. Only six short months had passed since her initial diagnosis of bladder cancer that ultimately ended with excellent in-home hospice care.
Susan was born on December 19, 1945 in Miami, Florida but spent most of her childhood in Newport News, VA. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1963 and attended Sacred Heart College in Belmont, NC. She was one of the first students to attend Christopher Newport College in its first decade. She completed her undergraduate studies at George Washington University in Washington, DC where she earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Fine Arts. She spent her final semester studying indigenous textiles in San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico where she lived for over three years and her first daughter was born.
Susan, her then-partner Michael Fles, his son Ian, and her nine month old daughter moved to Lémieux, France.
In 1979, she and her daughter returned to Newport News, where her second daughter was born in 1981. Susan remained in Newport News the rest of her life. She built a rich and diverse life that included a varied career spanning movement and art therapy with elderly adults and adults with intellectual disabilities, serving homeless families with H.E.L.P. in Hampton, and various retail positions where she connected with many people who often became longtime friends.
Susan was a committed volunteer for many years with the American Theater in Phoebus and took classes at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. Susan enjoyed drum circles in various settings and often joined Seven Sisters and Earth Rising gatherings.
One of the blessings of Susan's final days on Earth was her realization that she is loved so deeply by so many. She saved every card and savored every call, text, gift and visit. Her family feels grateful that she died knowing that she was loved.
She is survived by her daughter Oona Waxenfelter and her husband Tim of Washington, DC; her daughter Sasha Zatyrka and her husband Mark of West Suffield, CT; her most cherished grandchildren Zane, Elliana, and Colby; her sister Carol Hawkins and husband Slim of Newport News; her brother Paul Bauz and wife Sharon of Richmond; as well as seven nieces and nephews and their families, including Liz Barrows of Newport News. She is predeceased by her parents Wally and Louise Bauz and her older sister Marie Holtgreve and husband Paul of Indianapolis, IN.
A memorial service will be held November 9 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Peninsula in Newport News. Visitation will begin at 2pm, with a celebration of Susan's life at 3pm, followed by a procession to Lions Bridge in Mariners Museum Park to scatter Susan's ashes at her beloved daily walking spot. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Believe Big believebig.org or Lions Bridge marinersmuseum.org/park-and-trail.

I have passed on your well wishes to my mom and she deeply appreciates them. Last Tuesday, we were able to get her to CT via a very challenging RV ride during which she was in a lot pain. She says she is very glad to be with my sister and her family, especially her twin 18-month-old grand-daughters. Hospice began that day and she is well-cared for. My family and I visited over the weekend and cherished every moment with her. She still has quite a bit of pain and we're working to help her feel as comfortable as possible. You can still call her cell 757-525-0465 (she's unlikely to answer but listens to messages) and her address right now is 3340 Phelps Rd, West Suffield, CT 06093 (she loves receiving letters and cards). We're very grateful for all the support you've given her.

I too thank you all for the cards, phone calls, and delicious meals that I have received since my surgery.  I am improving daily, thanks to all the meds, which I hope to be off in another week or two.  I was in hospital for 3 nights, then transferred to a rehab facility for a week..which was a smart thing to do..got physical and occupational theraphy 3 times a day.  I am now home (for 2 weeks) and go to outpatient theraphy three times a week. This outpatient theraphy will only last about 6 weeks, and I should be able to drive and be able to get around good.

Alvin and Bonnie Blankenship's granddaughter, Erin's cancer levels are not where the doctor had hoped they would be by this time...This is a very critical week for little Erin, if her levels don't go down, she will be considered VERY HIGH RISK of the cancer spreading.  This Friday, Aug. 22, she is scheduled for another spinal tap and bone marrow test.  Please keep them in your prayers this week... Marilyn Moren called me the morning of her surgery.  Otherwise, I would never have known anything about it.  I was at the hospital that afternoon and visited for a short time.  Since then, I have been in contact with her daily.  Last night, I finally got the "whole story".

In early 2013, Marilyn was diagnosed with water on the brain (hydrocephalus). A shunt was put in at that time to drain the water from the brain and since then all has been well. A couple of weeks ago, she was gettng her hair cut and the hairdresser nicked her scalp with the comb and opened a small area. The shunt and the tubing are not very far under the scalp. (Maybe that area is more sensitive; don't know). When this happened, the tubing started to come out. Surgery this week was to replace the valve on the tubing and the reservoir. The doctor was afraid of infection since the area had been opened, so he replaced everything.  She had a tough couple of days but last night when I talked to her she was laughing and didn't seem to be in much pain at all.  This information is as correct as I can get it.  I still don't understand all of this but as long as the surgery was a success that's what counts.

Classmate, Marilyn Moren, had surgery yesterday to have a shunt re- placed in her head..
Her home address is 1194 Duncan Dr., Williamsburg, VA 23185 (757-259-0095).
The following information was copied from Wikipedia in reference to a shunt.
In medicine, a shunt is a hole or a small passage which moves, or allows movement of fluid from one part of the body to another.
The term may describe either congenital or acquired shunts; and acquired shunts (sometimes referred to as iatrogenic shunts) may be either biological or mechanical. Cerebral shunt: In cases of hydrocephalus and other conditions that cause chronic increased intracranial pressure, a one-way valve is used to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain and carry it to other parts of the body. This valve usually sits outside the skull, but beneath the skin, somewhere behind the ear. Lumbar-peritoneal shunt: In cases of chronic increased intracranial pressure such as Idiopathic intracranial hypertension and Hydrocephalus, a tube or shunt with or without a one-way valve is used to drain the excess cerebrospinal fluid from the brain and transport it to the peritoneal cavity, which is a cavity located in the abdomen area of the body. This shunt is usually inserted in between two of the vertebrae in the lumbar and punctures the cerebrospinal fluid sack or lumbar subarachnoid space, it then runs beneath the skin to the peritoneal cavity, where it is eventually drained away by the normal bodily fluid drainage system.[1] A Peritoneovenous shunt: (also called Denver shunt)[2] is a shunt which drains peritoneal fluid from the peritoneum into veins, usually the internal jugular vein or the superior vena cava. It is sometimes used in patients with refractory ascites. It is a long tube with a non-return valve running subcutaneously from the peritoneum to the internal jugular vein in the neck, which allows ascitic fluid to pass directly into the systemic circulation.

2. Carol Collier Sparrow, will undergo repair of umbilical hernia on July 24th. Outpatient surgery. 25 Maury Ave, Newport News, 23601

3. Robert Shapiro..went to visit Robert last week, ..still has double vision, and a little memory loss with words..he was in therapy when we got there. so we stayed and watch while doing his PT..seems to have done well..he remembers name and speaks good. He wanted to thank everyone for the cards and the visits he has been receiving..He will most likely be in the rehabilitation center for another couple of weeks.
Riverside Rehabilitation Institute, 245 Chesapeake Ave, NN, VA 23607 (Old Buxton Hospital, 928-8307).

4. Terry Smith...Will undergo. BKA on July 10th. the following are notes from Terry's wife, Debbie:

Terry is blessed to have such an amazing vascular surgeon. He and his assistant are truly the best. After much discussion today, it was decided Terry will undergo an attempt at a BKA. Dr. Schunn really wants to stay below the knee, but isn't sure it will be possible due to the extent of disease, but he really does not want to go above the knee if he can avoid it. Surgery is set for 7/10 and he will be in the hospital for about 8 days to include physical rehab. They have already set up a prosthetic professional; in fact she just called us, who will work with Terry to help him with the prosthesis. So, doctor did offer Terry to try to live with the pain and PT, etc, but Terry said he could not and felt this is best.
We both want to thank each one of you, who have been so wonderful, and for all of your prayers and words of hope and light. You mean so much to us, more than we could ever, ever say. Thank you
The surgery will be done at Chippenham and he'll be there about 3 days, then he'll be transferred to Johnston Willis for about 5 days for the therapy and prosthetic work.  4024 Bronholly Rd., Chesterfiled, VA 23832

5. Susan Bauz, is in DC seeing a kidney specialist..her kidneys are inflamed, and not draining..

Please keep all these classmates in your prayers, as they go through their surgeries and their healing process.

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE IS FROM CLASSMATE TERRY SMITH'S WIFE DEBBIE. I want to just catch everyone up on what's happening since Terry's last surgery on his leg. We have been waiting for his surgeon to return from vacation for two weeks to make a decision Monday, as there is nothing more they can do as far as stenting , etc. He is in pain and is not healing. So we are trying to ready ourselves for this as they have told us to. They have done all they can as far as going in, they said. I will post more after he sees the surgeon.

Hi, everybody! When you have more doctors than girlfriends you are on your last leg. So far, Lorraine (Miss Petersburg, 1963) has hung with me for 47 years. If we were Catholics she would be a Saint! I will try to make it.  Just had a brain scan and doctor said it was negative. I said what does that mean? He said "you have no brain!" I asked him if that was why my ER room was adjacent to the hospital morgue?. He did not laugh. No sense of humor in the ER. They wanted to amputate me at the neck. Bastards! Still coaching semi-pro adult flag football. ( We are way too serious about flag football, but we did win Nationals last year!) Having fun. Laughed my head off at Va Tech reunion a few months ago.

My vascular surgeon is now recommending amputation at mid thigh for best possible success. If my heart is found strong enough, they will attempt amputation this FRIDAY, or early next week! please pray for God's blessings during this surgery! God bless each of you.....and thank you for you continued prayers and support! I will keep you up to date as best I can as things progress. Thanks - Butch

My family and I greatly appreciate all you and our Typhoon Family are doing for me with regards to prayer. It is my opinion that God is the one I need to make it through the surgery. If I live through the surgery I have no doubt the Lord will see me through the recovery phase! And from there we will defeat this setback in life. Again, thanks to everyone for the prayer support. I am pretty sure Friday will be the day...and I will keep you up to date as best I can. God Bless You! Butch
