IN MEMORIAM

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Obituary

Money wasn't abundant for Billie Schaefer's family when she was growing up.

She described her childhood as having a home, but not always a house.

Because of that experience and a mission trip to New York City, Mrs. Schaefer decided to help those in Richmond who needed a hand.

In 1992, a year after representing Winfree Memorial Baptist Church in a New York soup kitchen - one of the largest in the country - Mrs. Schaefer started Pennies for Heaven Inc., a nonprofit organization that provided food and clothing to the city's homeless.

"She felt that it was her calling to help others," said friend Susan Ratliffe.

Mrs. Schaefer, who worked as a nurse at Johnston-Willis Hospital for eight years before becoming a stay-at-home mom, died of cancer Tuesday at her Midlothian home. She was 61. The concept of Pennies for Heaven began on a Saturday morning in March 1992, when she and her son bagged 30 lunches and drove to Richmond. They found a vacant lot, and 10 men came that day.

Mrs. Schaefer and her family continued providing breakfast and lunch on Saturdays and Sundays in the city, setting up locations under the Mayo Bridge, in Monroe Park and in Jackson Ward.

In July 1992, Mrs. Schaefer opened the Pennies for Heaven thrift shop at 2 E. Broad St., where the items sold went to buy food for the weekend distributions.

"Her whole life was about helping people one way or another," said a daughter, Cristy Zeller of Flagstaff, Ariz.

Mrs. Schaefer also supplied toiletries, toys, blankets, socks, gloves and hats to those who needed them.

In 2006, while battling cancer, Mrs. Schaefer closed the Pennies for Heaven thrift shop.

In addition to her daughter Cristy, Mrs. Schaefer is survived by her husband of 38 years, Bill Schaefer of Midlothian; a son, Jay Schaefer of Richmond; two other daughters, Sara Genua of New York City and Ross Schaefer of Richmond; a brother, Joe Hehl of North Carolina; and two grandchildren.

A celebration of Mrs. Schaefer 's life will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Winfree Memorial Baptist Church, 13617 Midlothian Turnpike, in Midlothian.
